Understanding Behaviors and Counseling Solutions for Children, Adolescents, Families and Individuals
I am a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) based in Nederland, Colorado, providing psychotherapy services to clients along the many stages of life development. I offer individual and family meetings with hope that my clients never stop growing towards the person they would like to become. I welcome all stories.
My background includes 25 years working in local school settings, Community Outreach and Special Education. Throughout the mix, I have combined humor, play, relationship and creativity in my practice. I have been able to weave work with Mental Health/Community programs in the Philippines, Mexico, Guatemala, Tanzania, Uganda throughout my career. I earned an MA in Alternative/ Experientiial Education and Masters in Social Work from U of Denver. The experiences and the shift between cultures have helped enrich my understanding of diverse perspectives. I have also lived and struggled with the vulnerable and despairing. This has helped me know that life's appearance is never final. We can overcome. I am committed to providing culturally competent, non-judgmental support for all clients. I have been a resident of Boulder County since 1981. I am licensed in Colorado : CSW #1180
My areas of interest & specialties include deep understanding of your personal history and how patterns have been created in order to help you navigate challenges. These helped you survive then and have a reason for being a part of you. I help you understand all parts of your thoughts and behaviors. None of them are a sign of "brokenness". We work on new dialogue with yourself as well as enhanced behavioral strategies, communication and boundaries, to get closer to where you want to be. I can provide parenting support and mood management. Pain and suffering is as common in mental health as joy and contentment. It is my goal to help build communication and social skills that allow us to move fluently between ups and downs. I work through Cognitive Behavioral discussion, understanding neuroscience of emotions and behavior, body based regulation practices, Mindfulness practices and trauma reduction techniques, including EMDR.
Have you ever felt like you had a large wild animal inside yourself or inside a family member? It might feel out of control or caged up. You may experience anger, fear, shame or guilt that feels like a beast : to be kept secret. The beast is a beautiful, wild part of each person with specific purpose. Emotional growth includes gaining understanding and accepting relationship with who we are, our past history and our current desires. We must align with our inner life in order to be free to move forward. My work is to help align your sense of 'what was' with 'what is now'. My goal is to help you build skills that reinforce your mental health to confidently react to your world today.

Depression, fear, anxiety, "People pleasing" , stuckness, insomnia and impaired relationships are some of the most common and uncomfortable symptoms of a traumatic experience. Trauma is when an event overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope, and causes feelings of helplessness. Counseling and focused treatment can help you recover motivation, perspective, and joy that you once had in your life.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. EMDR therapy does not require talking in detail about the distressing issue, or homework between sessions. EMDR, rather than focusing on changing the emotions, thoughts, or behaviors resulting from the distressing issue, allows the brain to resume its natural healing process. EMDR therapy is designed to help process traumatic memories in the body and recategorize them to memory that no longer have the emotional impact. Part of the therapy includes alternating eye movements, sounds, or taps. For many clients, EMDR therapy can be completed in fewer sessions than other psychotherapies. EMDR can be useful for the following situations:
“Being able to feel safe with other people is probably
the single most important aspect of mental health;
safe connections are fundamental to
meaningful and satisfying lives.”
“Neuroscience research shows that
the only way we can change the way we feel
is by becoming aware of our inner experience
and learning to befriend what is going on inside ourselves.”
